Managing My Money

A free 16 episode course with regular assessments and a final statement of participation certificate from the Open University

Suitable for all secondary school students

One of the most important life skills that young people can get at school is the ability to cope with everyday finance. In adult life there are a few days when you don't need money skills: whether budgeting or banking, payroll or even planning a holiday.

Share Radio and the Open University have teamed up to provide an online free teaching resource which answers this need perfectly: a 16-episode audio podcast/slides -based course called 'Managing My Money'. Each pair of episodes comprises two 25 minute audio podcasts and an online quiz. Following the final test at completion, the student receives a 'Statement of Participation Certificate'.

It's also designed to meet teachers' needs to monitor progress, with a very simple third-party referee system by which Share Radio sends a progress email to the teacher after each student's weekly assessment.

The course includes:

  • financial planning,

  • income, taxation and benefits,
  • expenditure and budgeting,
  • debt and borrowing,
  • saving and investment,
  • housing,
  • pensions, and
  • insurance.

Share Radio's broadcast version of the Open University's very popular online course is lively and entertaining, orchestrated by Glen Goodman and Annie Weston. The audio podcasts are supported on www.shareradio.co.uk with accompanying slides, links to a jargon-busting glossary, inflation tables and a budget planner.
